The base rock doesn't have to be live before I add fish or corals does it?

no in fact it wont become live unless you add fish and corals, as there has to be a source of ammonia/nitrite/nitrate for the bacteria to grow.

but remember not to add to much at once as the bacteria must grow to consume the excess ammonia. if they can grow fast enough ammonia or nitrite, or nitrate may rise to toxic levels and kill live stock.

all i know i say and nitrate there are a few types of bacteria deep in lr and sand bed that will remove nitrates turning them into nitrogen, but really you main export of nitrate will either be a coil dentirator(bacteria powered), plants, or water changes

I'll just buy 45lbs of LR from live aquaria which costs $90 plus $1.39 a pound for shipping so it ends up being like $112. Then I'll just buy 40 lbs of base rock locally.

The only live rock I have are the rocks I collected back in the early 90's (when it was still legal) from the Gulf about 30 miles off of Clearwater Florida at 60-70 ft deep. Do not use live rock from the ledges in Gulf of Mexico for it will continuously release phospates into your tank as it breaks down.

    Good rock

I received 80 lbs of live rock from Reefatopia yesterday for 150.00 this included shipping, the rock was clean and looked and smelled good. My 75 gal. was clear in an hour, there has been no rise in ammonia. This was listed under their lot prices. I would recommend them to everyone
