Good Or Bad Idea

My girlfriend was at the ocean today and she picked up some snails from the rocks. Now she wants to put them in my tank!!! Does anyone now if they will case any problems? Is it safe to put snails collected from the ocean into my tank..

a sweet gesture on your girlfriends part but it is usually frowned upon to take critters from there tidal ocean home when at the beach. first question: is this a cold water ocean?as this will shock the poor little guys if they are put into 80+- degree tanks like the ones most reefers run. also could you post a pick? this will help determine its reef safeness. i wish you luck.

 

They are from colder waters as they are from Cape Cod(MASS). I am thinking this is a bad idea to put them. I am unable to get a picture at this point do to the fact that my camera is broken .

Probably a bad idea. Might live for a while but will most likely die. Dying stuff in tank not a good thing. Your tank water is above 76 no? Water around cape cod is probably 60? I don't know but probably a bid difference.

 

ya my tank right now with the heat that was around here was at about 85 (nothing living in it right now) but now its down to 80 and I would guess that the water around here would be about 60-70 at the max. thanks for your input

 

no problem.. hey, before you go stocking that tank of yours, it would be a good idea to make sure you can get that temp more stable yeah?

Is your heat being caused by lighting? Are you running metal hallides? A good cure to the heat caused by them is to raise them up a bit and put some good fans between them and the tank. So I guess the first question is where is your heat coming from?

 

My heating is coming from the metal hallides but also the room temp. I don't run the AC's when I am not home so during the last few weeks its been very warm what a summer this one has been. I currently have the lighting unit about a foot off of the tank. I am also trying to find a good idea to try to keep that light way from my eyes when i want to look at the tank looking at hanging a metal blind or something in front of it for now.. New tank and DIY stand coming in about a year.. can't wait to upgrade.... I am just starting cycling at well I have a 55G tank with about 45lb of live rock in it right now..
