The reflector design does not maximize the bulbs potential and the bulbs are not high quality. If you intend to use this on a 40 breeder it will be more than sufficient. I would look to change out bulbs in 3 to 6 months.

You'll find alot of people are still thinking of the olden days of odyssea fixtures when they were built with cheaper components and quite possibly were deamed a fire hazard. I dont think I have read anyone in recent times that have had that issue. Odyssea fixtures are your basic entry line light. Yes like mentioned they are far from top of the line, but for newer people with newer tanks I think they are just fine. Alot of people say buy big upfront cause lights are in a sense an investment. At the same time though I very high number of people that start into the hobby and stay almost always move into bigger tanks, so I say go cheap now and save those dollars for the high end light on the bigger tank.

I use 2 odyssea lights, one on my 75g reef & one on my 30g mantis tank.
