Milton I was only joking about the gun. And honestly the buddy system is the best idea thrown out here.

This thread is getting to political and I don't want to be "that guy" which gets it closed and locked down. So check your PM for my Pro-gun views and why the average person SHOULDN'T carry one for defense.

Why doesn't she just carry around a full grown mantis? ;D

J/K, why not your basic self defense classes? My parents and I have done this, it works pretty well IMO. Whether for one person or 3 or 4.

If the "baddies" are armed, well thats a different story... I guess its really up to her/your morals.

Telling people to break the law to protect themselves from lawbreakers:confused:. If she can't can't legally carry a gun, don't frickin carry a gun.

She can bring a whistle (statistically very effective), she can carry a flare gun (which is oddly unregulated in a lot of states and I imagine burns like hell (The Road) and puts a light on the situation). And she can make friends and car pool. There are other options too. Like tactical strobe lights and even, literally, flame throwers (something else that is oddly unregulated). (But I am half joking on the flame thrower)

Anyone who pulls out some myth that a 9 doesn't have stopping power is reading too much on the internetz and almost assuredly has never shot anyone. Because their next line is usually something along the lines of "but my .4x has stopping power" which is not realistic.

"Stopping power" comes down to placement, not the size of the hole. Sticking with handgun munitions... Since almost nobody (especially bad guys) carries an extra mag, you're far better off having a 15 round 9mm than you are a 7 round .45 ACP as you shoot blindly and wildly because you are A. running and B. scared half to death and are possibly C. returning fire. An empty gun is as useful as a brick...

EDIT: Civilian pepper spray is effective. If some one *really* has a grudge with your girl, it may not stop them; but some random attacker? It'll be plenty effective - they want an easy target. Not something with teeth.

what ever you do magus somthing is better than nothing and I can see where you are concerned and want to do somthing about it.

but there isa product I would like you to look at, its a self defence wistle.
they make it built in to the mace so you get both at the same time and it is loud and proud to make alot of attention.

somthing diffrent and easy to carry around

maby self defence classes with whistle and spray and stun gun LOL really though it would be a tripple threat and alot cheeper andd more forgiving than a gun without braking the law.

I have 40+ months in Iraq and afganistan and have fired a 9mm at enemy forces multiple times as well have have been next to the guy firing the pistol. I have witnessed its stopping power as well as my opionion of its lack of stopping power.

While I do agree that shot placement is everything, it still does not do what I think other calibers can deliver. Not with the standard issue FMJ/ball rounds.

So I do know what I am talking about, thanks for issuing the online e-peen challenge though. Based on my upfront and personal expereince a 9mm is not, nor will ever be my choice in personal carry firearm, my .40 is.

That's an interesting and scary thought. I'm quite paranoid about walking around campus late at night as well, even though I go to a private school. No matter what kind of school you are going to, drunk college kids are everywhere, and something you can't avoid going to college.

Your best bet is tasers and stun guns, but they are a bit pricey. If you are a DIY'er make one out of a disposable camera. haha Or dish out a can of whoop-a$$! lol

We've done the camera stun gun thing as a joke before. The only deterent that came from it was the punch in the mouth deterent to not 'scare' someone else as that about all it does. lol.

khowst a stun gun of the righ type and placement is great as a joke its funny since I got my cousin with one ;D

the prong style works the best, OC spray, for anyone who has been sprayed, works great ant makes them at least think twice IMO and give the attacke time to get away of call for help.

Ok, guys, take it easy please.
As with everything else, there are different opinions.

I understand that when my significant other is at risk, it is really "go time", and trust me, I would definitely go, and go very well. But with her guns are definitely a no go. No negotiating, no hiding it, she is simply 100% against them and never even seen one.
Buddy system is not possible, she's staying in her office at campus until 9 or 10 pm every day due to the very short time she has to finish her field paper. She's not the type to stay working late, but pressure has taken a good toll on her, and we're in a tough situation. She has 1 month to finish this, if not, she has to get back to Russia, so working late (when everyone else has gone home) is something she must do.

I think a lot of good ideas came out of this thread for me. I like the whistle/spray combo thing and she seems to be more comfortable with that type of defense system. At least this would be one more thing that an attacker has to overcome. The spray, or whistle sounds like a winner in the short term.

I'll start looking here in Knoxville for self defense classes. I don't know how much they cost, but I'm sure they're really worth it. I only wish she didn't freak out and start crying when in danger or scared, but she does. Maybe these classes can teach her that people are only that: people. And that they have their weak spots just like anyone else does.

What do you think? Anything else I could try or do, that does not involve a gun or breaking the law?

By the way, I found the suggestion for the hunting license a little funny. And I know the suggestion was a good one, but I doubt she'd want to carry a shot gun in her purse LOL... I already asked ;)

Thanks again, guys. You're always great help!
