If she cries and really freaks out when scared, it sounds like some sort of class to build up her confidence is needed. Buying a can of mace doesn't solve the problem. Just like buying a gun doesn't solve the problem. She needs to learn how to stay calm and address the threat confidently and under control. The strong prey on the weak and scared. If she learns how to stay calm and under control forcibly tells these people to leave her alone, followed up by some sort of taser or spray is her best defense. If there are a lot of other bystanders around a loud hand held panic alarm system (similar to the panic alarm on newer cars) could deter a potential attacker.

No matter what system you decide to go with she needs to learn to stay calm and under control or she could make the situation drastically much more dangerous.

I have my Utah carry permit and there are numerous situations where you can't lawfully carry your pistol. I can't remember all the situations but if I remember right schools, gov't buildings, any building that posts a no guns allowed sign, liquor stores and any place that serves alcohol, you are not allowed to carry if you have been drinking (that includes one beer). I'm sure the list is bigger that is just what I remember off the top of my head. It's been 2 years since I got my permit and I haven't followed all the new laws. Some things could have changed.

I don't agree with the hand to hand route, that's a last resort for when you run out of bullets and you've lost your knife.

It's really hard to stop a "determined, eager and highly motivated male" from taking down a woman, seriously, a few kicks in the jewels is just gonna make him more violent. What if he's athletic and strong, what if he's done a little hand to hand, then she doesn't stand a chance. Or is she gonna pull those moves while being tackled hard by a sprinting dude? no...

If she was chased to her car, and this happened on campus, chances are he lives there and will notice her pattern.

God help anyone who does that to my girl.

+k, a+, and amen. that whole hand to hand thing is good, but if you are thinking of that as the first line of defense, your asking to become a statistic.

I'm late to this thread and not going to read the whole thing, but I'll add my opinion here.

This gun talk....not going to get into it....

I think she should take some sort of self defense class. She can learn self confidence and other ways to take care of herself. For the mean time, here are things I learned in my campus safety class:

Never walk alone. I know you said it's hard for her to get a buddy, but she needs to try. A lone female is a very easy target and what attackers will look for.

Avoid dark and isolated areas as much as possible. Try to walk under as much light as you can, and in the most populated areas you can. I know that's hard at night, but if she has to walk farther to walk through safer areas, do it.

Change up your route. Some times these attacks are not spur of the moment, and a person will watch someone awhile before they make their move. It is important to take a different route, as well as switching up the times, as much as possible.

Always carry a cell phone in one hand and your car/house keys in another. Keep 911 stored in your cell phone and have it ready to call in case of emergency. And always have your keys out, so as soon as you get to your destination you can get into safety quickly, instead of fumbling around looking for your keys. And if you're getting into a car, lock the doors immediately. Same as when you enter a house. Another benefit of carrying your keys and cell in your hands, is that if you have to punch, you can put them in your fist, and it will make your punch stronger.

If you ever thinks someone is following you, err on the side of caution, call 911 and start screaming at the top of your lungs to draw attention to yourself and the situation. Often that is enough to scare the attacker off.

Always keep your head up, eyes alert and scanning, and walk with confidence. Look strong and sure of yourself and like you could whoop some ass.

Ok, that's all I can remember at the moment!

Yes KC that is sound advise. However, the fight begins before the first blow has landed. She was chased, that is an attack. All bets are off.

Anyway, I digress from further comments.
