Ocean Runner and Eheim are both very efficient and relaible pumps with a good reputation. I am a die hard Ocean Runner fan having 4 of them based on some pretty involved testing I did but the Water Blasters are looking pretty good. Not cheap but I may try one soon.

Mags are still around but they run very hot, are not as quiet and often vibrate plus use more energy than many others. I still have a couple but I only use them for mixing new saltwater in the winter months when I need the additional heat.

I use a nag pump and like it much more then my eheim. It is more quite then my overflow and I never sense heat. Curious as to whic model and how old the previous posters pump is/was?

I have owned the Mag 3. 5. 7 and 9.5 over the years. The design has not changed and if you check all the reef forums you will find heat, noise and power are common complaints everywhere.
I did a detailed test on 6 or 8 different comparable pumps a few years ago using a Kill A Watt meter, 10 psi pressure gauge, ball valves, digital thermometer and 1" water flow meter and the Mags did not fare well compared to the Ocean Runners and Eheims of comparable size. Running one circulating in a Rubbermaid tub raised the temperature fairly quick compared to several of the others, the only pump that run hotter was a Quiet One 4000 which was terrible.

interesting. I have a 12 and an 18 (I think) and they are the best pumps I have ever owned. I haven;t had to adjust at all for temperature and like previously mentioned the sound is much less then my overflow. Price is hard to beat as well. I wonder if ball valves don't change the equation dramatically? Neither of mine are dialed down in any form

There are hundreds of posts and threads on Mag pumps and their heat and noise problems on all the reef forums. Once in awhile you get a good one but I never have with about 6 of them now.

Is it really no sound and no vibrations??? I have an eheim 1260 and I'm waging war trying to get it quiet with a pad under the sump and new more flexie suction cups. It's brand new and I can hear it from upstairs.
