I have a small sea star called a "sand sifting star" and any lighting should be fine. That and a few sand snails would be good for a 29 gal. As far as small tank sand gobies, you might look at a sleeper banded goby.

I don't think that the star will last very long in such a small tank. It will eventually run out of food. You could try a fighting conch, a few nassarius snails though. Really I believe the star will be a waste of money for you.

I'm very sorry for confusing you but if you look at the size of the tanks of the people that are talking about the star, they have 90's. You are rolling with a small tank. I only have 1 ss star in my 150 gallon and I even worry bout it. Yes snails are the way to go to stir your sand.

I agree 100% with Daniel. Unfortunately, your tank is just too small for a sand sifting star, a diamond goby, gold head goby, or really any fish mentioned here yet.
Nassarius snails do a good job. Conch's do too but IMHO your pushing too small of a tank with one of those as well. I would go with 15-20 nassarius snails in your situation.

Liveaquaria.com has a listing for a Two Spot Goby(a sand sifting goby) that they state can be in a tank as small as 10 gallons.

You could do maybe a yellow watchman goby. They stay pretty small
