Now that I have my metal halide fixture I want to add some sps. I was thinking to start with a birdsnest and maybe a couple of monti caps. Are these good sps to start with?

Yes birdnest are really good to start with and monti too. Particularly the encrusting ones.

Definitely Montipora. Birdsnests are quick growers, but usually go for more $$ than montipora.

based on my recent experience, Pink Birdsnest is great and has shown some growth within 5 weeks of purchase ( about 3 - 5mm extensions on the branches)
the scrolling monti looks well, but I cant see any growth to be honest ( but nothing negative to report either so thats good news for me)

Everyone says that birdsnest is easy, must just be me. For some reason, I can not get birdsnest or digitatas to survive.

Acros are much more hardy in my experience. They will start to loose color as you system params get off. Easy to keep an eye on them.

Green star polyps look great under halides, easy to care for too.

Those are a softy, and not an SPS.

I know too many people that have killed birdsnests- even the green BN- to recommend them to a new SPS keeper.
