I am working on getting my stand done for my 180 and I already have a 75 that I was planning on using as the sump... I put it in there the other day and man that thing is big... doesnt leave me much room on the side, just enough for my cal reactor and co2 bottle... what size is everyone else using on their tank? I will not be doing a custom acrylic one so thats out of the question... all pumps will be internal, I wiill have a refugium on one side and I am hoping to get a octo extreme 250 on the other side so I will need at least that much space.. what do yall think? ditch the 75 for something smaller?

    A 75 is a great size sump for a 180.

My 193g tank will be using my 75g sump I have.

It sounds like you want all your equipment under the tank in the stand. You can do that, but it will always be cramped.

Now maybe if you had a 65g or other 3 foot tank then you would gain a foot in your cabinet.

On my 90g, I only have a 17g sump, so even doubling the gallonage to 180 would still put it under 40g's if you kept the same ratio as I have on the 90g. As long as the sump has enough room to spare for water in the pipes when the power goes out, then you will be fine. Usually you like to go as big as you can. My 17g sump has only like 1.5-2' of room to spare when I have all the pumps off.

I'm just afraid its a little too tall and a little too long.. I had to use a 1x8 on the top beam of my tank so I didnt have to use a front brace so I have plenty of vertical room except right where the beam is. I guess if it was a little shorter it would make me feel better.. a foot of the sump would be alot, I wonder if there is like a 40" long glass tank, maybe 16 high too?

Bigger is better. I have a 30 and would like bigger but it really depends on other things you're planning around it. If it's just to cramped to be practical I would get smaller.

I hate to say it, but you could have gotten by with a 2x6 top piece, instead of a 2x8. that said, I bet you would be fine with a 40 breeder or similar if AV8 uses only a 30g on his 180.

Or you could have a tank made to meet the 40" size you want. Aqueon or perfecto do not make a 40" tank. They go from 36 to 48 inches.

here is a pic so yall can see the size of this 75, its a monster lol.. dont mind the stand, I am still working on it!

I think it needs to be a little shorter in height and maybe a foot or so shorter in length.. I just got my lighting yesterday and I have a 2x250w PFO ballast and a single 250w PFO ballast that I need to fit in there.. these things are massive!
