The gum is a waste and the prescription stuff is mainly "anti-depressant" medication(believe it or not). I recommend the patch. Slap on a patch and go. I was a heavy tobacco user. Smoked cigs, loved a chew when drinking and, wasn't afraid of snuff.

Thanks for the info mission. My mother in law says the patch is the way to go too. I wonder if I should start with number 2 or something... right now I am chewing leaf tobacco which isn't near as hardcore as cigs or skoal. My progression has been chewing skoal to quit smoking, then chewing redman to quick skoal. My next step would be quitting all together, but I might just go straight to the patch. That method might seem crazy but it worked last time... I went 3 months with no nicotene then had a couple weak moments and now I'm back at it.

I have to disagree with the prescription stuff. Me and my wife both quit on chantex and I have to say I didn't try for the most part to quit. We both still want cigarettes from time to time but quitting was that much easier. I once quit on the gum but my wife has never quit before. she smoked for 24 years. I only smoked for 14. But hats off to any one that quit, it is a hard thing to do.

To my knowledge, that was only one medication. Back in the mid 90's Zyban was a trade name for a popular anti depressant med, Wellbutrin.

I don't know about Chantex, or what it is, but it seems it has some surreal side effects. Read up on them if you're interested.

Hate to be an armchair quarterback here, but distill it all down and the facts haven't changed. You have to want to quit. Without that component, the deck is stacked against you.

If you smoked a pack or more a day, and you're still quit after this contest started--your accomplishments are amazing. Keep up the great work!! :)

I used the patch to quit. It works, but keep in mind it only assists the quitter with one aspect: the physical craving. For me, the patch was insanely effective insofar as the "need" to have one goes. When on the patch, I always had that "no thanks, just had one!" feeling. However, quitting smoking (or chewing, or dipping) is multi-dimensional. After your body is weaned off the dire and incessant NEED for nicotine, the more subtle (. . . .need. . . ) kicks in.

It can be reaching for the pack of smokes on your bedside table after waking up; or as non-chalant as the progression towards the door after a meal at work, or as in-your-face as pushing in the cigarette lighter in your car--all months after you've had your last cigarette.

Bottom line, again, you have to want to quit.

I'm probably making enemies with every word here, so I'll stop.

Again, congrats to all you hard-core smokers who have kicked the habit!! Keep it up!!!!!

Chantex did have little side effect on me, but only the first 2 days. My wife had weird dreams for a week. I have know others that have takin this drug and didn't have no luck what so ever. All I know is that I didn't even try to quit. I smoked 2 packs a day and with in a matter of 1 1/2 months I was down to 2 cigerettes a day and that is when I really tried to quit.

But yes anyone who quits hats off to you.

That is great, glad you are sticking with it. That was a habit I never picked up in life and glad I didn't. I have watched a Grandmother and Brother-in-law die from lung cancer so I don't tolerate it a bit in my house.

    Keep with it!
