I have a photosynthetic gorgonian frag. Some said just superglue it to a rock, so I did. Now the base of the frag got soft after 3 months and it won't stand now so obviously something is wrong. Would have thought something would have shown before now as an issue but I guess I'm wrong. Guessing cut the offending tissue off and just kind of lay the Frag in the tank or try gluing it again? Or have I already killed it? :(

The reason everything is closed is because the lights have just come on.

Lost my alk test bottle in a room shuffle still looking...

Only thing i can think was the way I mounted it has caught up with me.

just cut off again above the dead area.

This is how I mount my gorgorians. I get epoxy and make a small mound on a frag plug. I then take a pen cap and before it dries push the cap in to make a small open area. I then place a small amount of super glue in the opening, place the frag in there and push the epoxy to close the hole.

what are you feeding the gorg?

Maybe I'm not supplementing enough? I have this freeze dried powder I got from reef cleaners that i mix with a some saltwater and try to target feed with from a turkey baster.

If I don't care if they are moveable, I'll just prop them up in a hole in the live rock. Cut the dead tissue first if you try. Most of the time the superglue works fine, but I've had them die occasionally when doing that.

If it is photosynthetic I wouldn't worry too much about trying to feed it.

what kind of gorgorian is it? I cant really tell from pics, but is it yellow with brightly colored polyps? In general, brown polyped gorg dont require AS MUCH supplemental feeds as they ahve more zooxanthellae that allows for photosynthesis but even they require feedings.

however the bright colored polyps, reds, yellows, whites etc do not contain very much and MUST be feed regularly.

Can you find out any info on the powder?

We have several in our NPS tank and have fragged and grew out many. We have a sea fan, an orange gorg, a yellow gorg, and a red gorg. We feed our tank several times a day with a mixture of oyster feast, rotifers, baby brine, coral freenzy, coral pearls and cyclopeeze. We dont feed all those at any given day, but rotate them frequently. At the bare minimum i would at least feed cyclopeeze

It is definitely the brownish polyps.

I attached a older pick i took when they where extended so you could see. Sorry its sideways I just recently figured out why that happens with my phone lol. I read the site when they sold it and it has good stuff in it everything in my tank seems to love but, go figure, I picked up a discounted container because there wasn't a label lol. John probably could tell me what is in it though. I have had this since the end of February or beginning of March and its always seemed very happy. First step when I get home will be to remount the frag and get it situated. Next time the polyps are out I will target feed and see how it goes. I'm hitting the LFS today so i could try to pick up some of your suggestions that you use.
