So my LFS has a yellow gorg with white polyps for 20, pretty big, and it looks to be in great health. I understand they are hard to keep, but whats so hard about them?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
If they are non-photosynthetic than they need frequent feedings of fine particulate foods. Target feeding them will not suffice long term, and in a small tank you risk compromising water quality with the frequent feedings. Try to get a specific name if you can.

Is there anyway to tell if its NPS or not? At the LFS they said they are relavitvely easy to keep, just need lots of flow and some need high light.

Most require feedings as mentioned, and require less light then most have in there mixed reef set up. i have played with several over time and have only found 2 different types i have had luck with. ;)

I think it is non-photosynthetic by your description.

I have had this one for 16 months now. It started out as a 1 inch piece on LR. 3/23/2010

Flow is by far the most important factor along with being photosynthetic. The one on the right recently died because the powerhead on that side went down and I didn't notice it right away. I have never target fed them. They just get what my fish eat.
Heres is a great link with info on them and also how to choose one that will live in your tank without feeding.Read the entire thread.Good luck.

Nice pics vinny, I guess I should look for a photosynthetic one instead of NPS, because I'd rahter have SPS the one gorgonian.

Homegrown, care to tell me what kind they were/are? ;D
