I heard the same joke with a variation: about a guy (who sounds like Jack Nicholson), working the drive-in speaker at a Jack-in-the-Box burger joint. The idiot customer keeps asking for french fries even after being told that they are out of french fries. Finally the exasperated worker says over the speaker:
Voice: OK, buddy. Listen carefully. Who put the "straw" in strawberries?
Customer: Uh, Nature did?

Voice: That's right! Now, who put the "ape" in apricot?
Customer: Umm...Nature did?

Voice: Right! Now, who put the "freak" in french fries?
Customer: <pause> Uh, there ain't no "freak" in french fries.

Voice: THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN TELLING YOU!
THERE ...AIN'T ... NO ... FREAK'N ... FRENCH FRIES!
