I'm going to have to climb into the tank to do my aquascaping. Almost all my rock is dry rock so I'll be able to do this before I fill the tank. Going with dry rock saved me several thousand dollars. It also cuts down on the chances of introducing any nasty hitch hikers among all that rock. If I were to get anything nasty in this tank it would be darn near impossible to ever get it out. If you think it's expensive to set-up a tank like this the first time, imagine having to tear it down and do it over again because of an impatient mistake.

I just did a little math. With the flow rate of my RO/DI, it would take me 5.5 days just to fill the tank. This got me thinking further. You really don't have the lattitude to make mistakes. By the sheer size of that thing, all you do will be governed by forethought. There's no removing the wrong fish. Bad hitchhiker? Bad news.

The typical problems we as reefers all remedy with time and sweat; you may or may not have the ability to surmount. I once read in a novel (don't know if it's true) that if you kick over an ant hill enough times, they'll either die of frustration, or pick up and leave. It would only take a few incidences of worst case scenarios before one would be tempted to throw in the towel working at a scale such as yours. Yes, sir. You'll have to do everything right the first time. The "what if" must always be your compass.

I'm thinking out loud here more than anything. This post was not meant to dissuade you (as if anything could change your course of action at this point, anyway!). You have a tremendous amount of responsibility in front of you to husband this tank. Speaking of which, your marriage IS strong, right? :)

Good call on the base rock. Quarantine should be a must, IMO--that's for both fish and corals. This tank will be utopia, and you will be the gatekeeper. Guard that velvet rope well, 'cause there ain't no V.I.P. room in this club.

I'm sure you'll do fine. You seem insightful, and you've already got the water change scenario well planned. Besides, you have unlimited resources here in 3reef. Your tank will be majestic. :)

    Sparky,

I've always been pretty methodical and practice in a detail oriented profession to day the least. I've been picking the brains of everyone on 3reef (and that other site) for over a year now. Oh, and I love a challenge. Re my wife, it helps that she had her own tank before. When the 125 was up she actually did most of the maintenance since I was sork 100+ hours/week at the time and she didn't have anything to do except take care of a dog and 3 babies and a 125g tank. She has sworn that she already takes care of the turlte tanks so maintenance for this one is on me. I really don't have a choice other than to get it right because it is too big for me to get out of the house.

I was wondering the same thing myself. I think that I may have to go a day without posting pics and then he'll show up.

Just remember you will be adding a lot of humidity to the house. Make sure you plan for it.

Build is looking good now that you have pics posted I won't have to file charges.

Yeah using dry rock has huge advantages, no aiptasia, majanos, mantis shrimp, gorilla crabs, the list is so long it makes the added time to cook, well worth it imo. Are you creating your aquascape out of the tank, then dropping the structures in?
