Maybe I missed it... but what LR? I thought this was all base rock... I really doubt it has had time to liven up yet...

I don't know... I have mixed feelings on the speed this tank has been stocked... wishing some folks with really large tanks would chime in...

it might be totally fine as far as I know... just seems very risky to me.

Guess that's what I get for not reading the entire thread. This makes me very curious also.

She wasn't able to get them out but she did turn off the powerhead. I got home about 7 hours after she discovered things and was able to easily get the anemone off the powerhead. AAMOF, when I moved the PH the nem just floated free. I transfered the nem to a 30gal tank by himself and turned off the PH in there. I'll watch and see how he does but right now I'm hopeful. I don't really see any damage to the base. It looks like about 25% of the tentacles were shortened up a bit.

bama, I can't remember off the top of my head what fish you've got but for a bit of perspective, I have 23 times the water volume as in your tank. Also close to 500 pounds of (now) live rock and 300 lbs of live sand. I'm not suggesting for a moment that big tanks are better or more fun than 10 or 30 or 100 gal tanks but each size presents its own advantages and challenges.

Ahh, but it makes things interesting doesn't it? ;D

;) I meant the exact opposite. That the tank is too big for an anemone. (for my own risk taking) Because of its ability to move, sting and kill coral, release toxins, etc.... it could easily become impossible to remove without major reconstruction of the rock work, etc. just because of the dimensions. Leading to some really unfortunatate ends.

Fair question. But I don't fully agree. You got water in the tank at the end of September. I suppose you finished your cycle in October sometime and now we're in the latter half of November. It's spent maybe a month in a tank that is cycled or so. And I don't think having base rock in a cycled tank for less than several months would really make it live. (with all the deep anaerobic bacteria pores and all) I mean, the tank cycled = bacteria caught up with the load. But that was with essentially 0 bio-load. And in a tank that size... it ain't goin to take much bacteria at all. yet.

If I was, for example, starting a new tank - I would not consider your rock as being able to seed the new one. I'd still call that base rock that's maybe slightly alive. Maybe that's just me.

Bacteria has to catch up to the bio-load that is present (just stating, I'm sure you're aware). It doesn't seem to me it has had time to catch up. I think the volume is large enough so that this won't become detectable very soon.

Everytime you add livestock, you raise the bar on how far the bacteria has to multiply before it catches up. Before it has. I think you haven't seen these spikes purely through volume.

I'm wondering if the bio-filth will accumulate faster than the bacteria can reproduce at this addition rate and eventually lead to problems once this little race comes to the finish line. At some point, these two sides of the scale are going to come to the tipping point.

Not trying to discourage or flame or anything... Something I see on 3reef all the time is "go slow" and nobody seems to ever say that on this thread... we don't want to wait to see pics of your finished tank any more than you want to wait to finish it ;D;)

Anyway, I won't harp on it. Just feeling like it needed to be said for the past several pages :) I would just hate for anything to happen to this build!!!

I do hope some of the "big names" on 3reef who have had experience with these volumes will chime in. I'd really like to hear a view on this (to shut me up!!!) from someone who's done it before.

As always, good luck and I look forward to more pics

I probably have the least knowledge and experience of anyone posting about this but a different point of view might get you going. with 0/0/5 being GTS's current readings his bacteria are capable of dealing with the current wastes. If bacteria can double their population in only 15 hours that would mean GTS can double his fish population and have everything cought up in only 30 hours. stocking once a week and not doubling the fish population seems fine to me.

Remember I'm a total noob with respect to most of the posters on here and may possibly have delivered some misinformation, but I think sometimes I am able to wrap my head around something if I look at it from a different perspective, which in this case is not based on the number of fish but the rate of increase.

Also we have to take GTS's skimmer into account. That thing is a gigantic beast of a machine, so the true bioload that the rock has to handle is significantly less than what it would be fighting against if the tank didn't have the skimmer.

Does it look like the anemone is gonna pull through?

I'm cautiously optimistic at this point. The good news is that it's not looking any worse. I moved it to a 30 breeder by itself. The tank is part of the main system, but since the nem is the only thing in there, it's easy to keep an eye on and easy to retrieve in the event of any problems. I'm running 12hours of 14k 175W MH over the tank and target feeding a little piece of frozen squid each night but I don't think that the nem is eating the squid.

I appreciate the kind thoughts. I'll post a picture before long but right now it's just a little bit depressing.

    Thank you very much ;D;D.

I just finished up a little treatment for one of my corals as well.
