I love those lyretails. It would be nice to be able to fit a school in my tank but I'm getting a tang next week and dont have quite the volume that you do.

I just did some googling on your new fish and this is what I found.

Also know as Scalefin Anthias, or the Sea Goldie. The females are yellow while the males are red with distinct single red dot on each pectoral fin

It looked like yours were all the male coloration from the pic. Do you have females or is your school more of a batchelor pad kind of thing?

Isn't it fun all the variation the fish trade sees in common names. I would be happier if they labled and sold everything by genus and species but then I'm sure that a lot of things would be mislabled. When they sell by common name at least you know that there's an element of mystery. Anyway, thanks for coming up with those other names for me. I'll try to track them down in a bit and see if I can learn anything new.

As too color... yeah it's definately the bachelor pad so this is going to be a bit of an experiment for me. I'm well aware of the conventional wisdom that says you should have 1 male and a harem of females both to avoid aggression and to ensure that the male keeps his bright colors on display. My LFS said "Nah, don't worry about that. We only get males in because they are so much prettier (true, that). Just put them in the tank and they'll do fine." Now I know that a lot of you have heard this song at your LFS before with some sad results but I'm very lucky to have a access to an above average fish store (What was it that Garrison Keeler said about the kids in Lake Wobegone?). Anyway, one of their showpiece tanks is just a little bit bigger than mine with similar lighting and similar flows. They put 7 males like these in the tank 6 months ago and they have indeed done great so I'll be watching for hte same results in my tank.

I'd be interested in knowing your param readings before/after/in a few days too. I'm curious :) and i agree with your conclusion completely.

that is really really pretty in your tank.

    I think it's time for a video ;););D

    Thank you, thank you ;D

Here are the Before numbers from Friday Dec 4th
    salinity 1.024
    pH 8.07
    nitrates 5-10
    alkalinity 8
    calcium 430
    magnesium 1290
    phosphate 0.08

I don't view these as perfect -- I'd like to see pH, Ca, & Mg all a bit higher and phosphates and nitrates at zero but for a very young tank I am pleased with the way things are holding up and I'm getting ready to start concentrating on my chemistry a bit more closely in an attempt to fine tune things. I feel that everything is in the 'acceptable' range at the moment and I'm not eager to screw things up by doing anything too radical (just small changes like adding 7 fish ;))

I will post some follow-up numbers soon.

Maybe a video isn't a bad idea after all but I was hoping to time it with a 3reef video contest ::)

Ugh you bit me to the video request!....

Well yea I too would like a vid... You can just make a short( not 15 sec.. But like 20-30 sec) video. And for the contest you can go 2 mins or so idk the rules.. But we all crave a video!
Perhaps by the time the video contest comes up you will have more coral/ fish in it.

    Thanks for the reply GTS:)

Yes, those are very different looking lyretails, nice ones too:) Apparently the lyretails are hardier than the purple queens. I don't know a lot about anthias, but I do know purple queens are not hardy;)

I will have to work on fixing my lack of deepwater sps issue. :)

Checked my nitrates again today. I just used a dip stick to be quick and still nothing really registering so they're less than 10. I take that as a good sign with 7 new fish all about 4" or so.
