It's Alive!!! I saw my japanese pistol shrimp tonight, looking good.I would post pictures of him but he's to fast. Never out in the open for more than about 2 seconds. Hopefully he and the goby will discover each other before too long.

After a quick look at some pics on line, I'm pretty sure that mine is a Hawaiian specimen -- very pretty, too.

Do other shrimp like Cleaner and Red Blood shrimp snap also? I hear a snap every now and then.

I find that this little diddy will have them seeking out each other before you can say "bottle of wine. . ."

Thanks, you and Amcarrig really did cheer me up. I never had shrimp in my earlier tanks other than a few tiny hitchhikers.

Sparky, it's good to see that there are other Tchaikovsky fans on here.

Haha I'm in an Intro to Music class in college, and I've heard my fair share of Tchaikovsky. I've seen Symphony #5 performed by the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. During some parts in the performance where I felt like I was in Band of Brothers or something...

And we saw Piano Concerto 1 which was absolutely positively insane.

And as for the question on if regular shrimp "pop", I don't think so. We've had our fair share of peppermint shrimp, and we've had our one cleaner shrimp since day one. Our pistol is the only thing in that tank that pops. Mantis shrimp pop as well, but theirs is a different pop. Normalling it's a "clink" like a rock hitting a rock (normally that's what they hit, other than food). Mantis pops are rapid, while pistol shrimp pops can be loud and very slow tempo. However, our pistol does rapidly click, as in not bang, when an intruder gets into his den and he doesn't want it dead, he just wants it out. Our red serpent star has endured at least 3 sessions of going down the wrong hole and getting clicked/carried out of it by the pistol  So whatever is popping in your tank is probably a hitch hiking pistol shrimp. Possibly a mantis, but it's normal pretty easy to find clues on if it's a mantis (IE snails missing, snail shell fragments found, rapid mild clicking rather than pops, etc). Both pistols and mantis can hitch hike, so my guess is you have a hitch hiker somewhere.

EDIT: make that 4 times that serpent star has gone down the wrong hole  He just got the boot again while I was feeding our sun coral. I heard the pistol clicking and I thought, "now what is he getting irked about?" I look down, and lo and behold he's basically got the star by the ear and is marching him out of his hole

+1 to Jwin. My other shrimp (cleaner and peppermints) do not snap or pop.

GTS, glad to hear all is well. I personally think Ravel's Bolero would be a better choice for the pairing....
