I hope you didnt get the wrong impression - it would just be a bummer to have any major disapointments. Obviously i am hoping that everything goes swimmingly

I think you made the right call with all dry base rock though for sure! I am having a hell of a time with my inherited "live fiji" rock.

In my next tank i will be buying the same base rock from BRS that you got

Hey something just occurred to me. How are you managing flow? In your FTS I only saw one powerhead and the two returns. That can't be enough can it? I'd think you'd be hooking up a couple of MP40s for flow.

I have two Tunze 6205's flowing over 5800 gph each. I'm probably getting another 3000 gph out of the returns so 14-15,000 gph in the display tank. I think this is turning over my water 25-30 times per hour.

It's funny, I can't really see much water movement in the tank but there are some little signs like my left power head which is located on the overflow above my highest rocks was directed at the front wall and a little bit downward. It blew all the sand away from the bottom of my tank and piled it up in a dune. Also there are a couple of spots in the tank where when the fish stop swimming they get blown backwards for several feet.

In a few weeks I'll have the Tunze's connected to my controller and this will allow me to generate some random flow. I've got a few more Turbelle streams for my frag tank and the smaller display tank.

I will keep an eye on him. He's sitting pretty much dead center of the tank and will have a lot of overlap from four 400W 14k MH's. I'm also getting ready to turn on 480W of VHO's. I hope that the noise from the electric meter spinning isn't too loud.

It would be interesting to see what kind of penetration you're getting with a par meter. Even with the VHO's I can't see much useful light going through 48 inches of water. I may be wrong though.

Congrats on the new additions, everything looks good.

Ha Ha Ha.... good one on the electric meter.

Thats probably the number 1 hidden cost to most of us looking at this thread. Sure lotsa cash to construct this tank, people saying "wow" that skimmer, lighting, powerheads, fish, coral, etc. alot of money... but the monthly energy cost... or even yearly. on top of salt, fish/coral food, media, and water filters .

Be interesting to see you lists all of your cost in maintaining monthly/yearly and how this tank has influenced your electric bill. Same way when people light up their houses for christmas.. especially that one guy who goes all out to win the christmas decoration contest... Everyone says "wow what a display" even more wow on electricity bill.

I've got a lot of really energy efficient stuff in the house -- geothermal heat pumps, zoned HVAC, programable thermostats, CF and LED bulbs -- but December is always one of my biggest electric bills. My wife and I started putting up the decorations today.
