This is a 5gal bowfront, 18 months old...

Over the past few months, this grass has been springing up... it pretty much spreading all over my rock... not sure if this is good or bad... by I'm having to trim the hedge to keep it at bay...

Can anyone tell me what it is, if it's a problem or not, etc.

    Thanks!!![IMG]

Its only a problem if you think its ugly. It certainly isn't hurting anything being there (as long as it doesn't overgrow coral) but you obviously have a nutrient excess in your tank.

What have you added recently or changed in your routine? Possible its just 'ots' - old tank syndrome....<Not sure I believe in it, but with a 5g its hard to say. IMO smaller tanks (even my 14) aren't meant to be permanent...there just not 'advanced' enough yet to mimic the ocean.

Can you take that rock out? If so, try removing it and scraping at the algae with a brush or anything that'll get it off. Try to get as much as possible instead of giving it a haircut

I actually just bought a cadlights 34G (CADLIGHTS) and plan on keeping the 5G going as a quarantine tank. I should have the new tank in about 1 1/2 weeks - but it will of course take some time to setup. I will not be moving the LR from my 5G.

I can't say I've changed anything. But I'll think about it some more.

A turbo snail will mow down that lawn. My own personal experience is that mexican turbos over zebras will chow down on hair algae.

I would suggest taking the rock outside, and getting the weed whacker and whack it off! OR clean your whacker REALLY good with alcohol and use some kind of PROTECTION so your whacker doesnt "pollute" the "tank". You might not like the results a few months down the road if your whacker "pollutes" the "tank"...

OK... I'll pick up some turbo snails... and I'll probably remove the rock and try to remove it with a brush... I've never done this, but I think a small wire brush would work.

As for it being pretty... yeah, it was before it started growing all over the place. I think I better get it off.

    Thanks for all the input.

I've also found that is it gets too long snails can't eat it. I'd pull it off the rock by hand were you can.

wire brush is a little harsh for the other living on the rock. I went to dollar general picked up a nylon scrub brush. Similar to what you wouldn scrub floors with. It doesn't remove coraline, and removes the hair algae.
