Not sure what it's properly called but to me it looks like grass when it's out.

The brown spot was like that when I recieved it and I'm hoping it will fill back in over time.

Any thoughts on how to help it along ie. should I try and clean that off?

Would love for the top of that to cover over with "grass' for that whole mountain/hillside look.

Bonus pic of Mandrin since he was snackin up beside the heater.

It's GSP, or green star polyps..a relatively easy coral to care for. Does not require much light or flow. Looks like it is doing great in your tank.

it looks like GSP (green star pollyp) to me. they should retract at night and when you poke them. they will spread relatively fast. some people regret having them but i agree with you they look cool. and with more blue (actinic) lights the green will pop out more. i have mine on an isolated rock surrounded by sand so they don't spread out in the tank.
