I have a AGA 15 long (24x12x12) and my HOB fuge is sitting way higher than the tank itself. If the pump pumping water into the fuge stops, there's a possibility of the display tank flooding. What can I do to fix this problem? I can't bring the fuge any lower, and if I were to upgrade to a taller tank, my only option would be a AGA 20 high, but with that, I'm still not sure if it would work or not. BTW its an Oddysea HOB fuge with skimmer, that is (24L x 4W x 13.5H) Any help is appreciated!

Dont fill up your tank so much.

yeah just fill up to the bottom of the black rim..i have a HOB fuge and fill up to the bottom of the black rim and when i cut the power off the fuge backflows about 3/4 of the fuge and is still plenty room from the edge

The thing is, I want to have the water level in the display tank to be a little higher. Right now its too low, and the splashing from the return is causing a lot of bubbles.

take a picture...its not gonna matter where your water line is on the return to create splashing, the splashing is cuz the water is going through to fast..just take some filter floss and jam it in there, just be careful you dont clog it up and then overflow your fuge..

First of all, I want to preface this comment by saying I havent got much experiance with HOB refugiums.

I have, however, been debating getting one, and have had similar potential problems that I have been thinking about. So, without hands on experiance with one, the idea I was having of fixing this issue was basically go make my own sort of overflow in the HOB fuge.

I was thinking maybe a peice of PVC pipe cut in half, around the return section from the refugium with holes drilled in the top. That way the water has to flow over that before going out, limiting the amount that can drain in the event of a poweroutage.

Once again, there could be flaws in this idea... but it's what I've been considering as an option :)

But the thing is the water is back-siphoning from the inlet side of the fuge. The output has a box covering it to prevent the fuge from draining too much, but the gravity is pulling the water out from the side the water goes in.

Could you do the same idea as the return section, but make a overflow that the water has to flow over before entering the rest of the fuge? This should limit the amount that can drain backwards out the pump side... I would think?

I would think you might even be able to match the pipe size with pvc, and put a corner so it angles up a ways, so as much can't flow out?

Just throwin ideas out here :)

with my fuge/skimmer combo, i keep my tank water right at the bottom of the black trim..when icut my power my fuge backflows about a gallon and a half, it doesnt drain the whole fuge just about 1/2 or a little more..if i didnt have filter floss in the box thing that the water sits in before going into the tank then i would have bubbles from the water coming down the pipe.

the filter floss slows the flow a little so there are no bubbles coming into the tank, but the filter floss wont overflow your fuge unless it gets clogged up with junk
