So on my lunch break each day I usually leave the office for a while and make my way to my LFS to stare at all of the awesome corals that I want, but can’t have yet (my tank is only a little over a week old). Today was no exception. As I was browsing and drooling over all the cool frags, I noticed a huge piece of Fiji that was covered in all sorts of cool stuff. It had over two dozen colonies of yellow polyps. Of these, at least 4 were the size of a quarter of larger. It also had a really, really nice mushroom that was about an inch or so in diameter, and it was green and gorgeous. It also had countless small encrusting corals that were tiny, but still easy to see and pick out of the great coralline algae. The rock itself was just over 11lbs, and is a perfect rock to use for a base.

So I stared at this crazy awesome rock for well over 10 minutes, just picking out all of the cool things growing on it (BTW some of the yellows were actually green…odd I know). I started to pull myself away from the glass, longing to own such a great rock, when I noticed the price…$78!

I was floored. I asked the owner and he confirmed it. He basically said that since the rock was so sizable that most people with established tanks simply couldn’t buy it due to a lack of room. So he dropped the price to sell it fast since it was from a trade in from earlier today. Apparently a lady had built a tank over the course of a year, and now she had to break it down and sell it due to a move. The owner knows this lady well and so he took the rock knowing it was in great health and well taken care of.

So I asked him if he would allow me to pay for it and let him hold it until my tank was ready to support it. He was more than happy to do so as long as I promised him a couple of frags when I got ready! The only issue that he knew of was that it had several wild anemones on it. The larges of these was slightly smaller than my thumb. I could see about 10 of them, most of them very small. I plan on adding a few peppermints to take care of those when I bring the rock home. So now I am a proud owner of a sweet new live rock that is COVERED in some really diverse stuff!

Now that I have gloated, can anyone give me advice about the yellow polyps? How to care for them, and what to expect basically?

Also, when can I frag the yellows or the mushroom? Sorry I am not sure what type of mushroom it is. All I can tell you is that it is a vibrant green and it’s bumpy.
    ;D

PS: i will add pics ASAP

they are very easy corals, they don't require feeding, but depending upon the type they may eat some small bits of food.
you could probably frag it as soon as they get used to your tank a, week or so

are they yellow sand polyps? if so, I got a frag with about 15 heads on it, there is not about 40 heads on the rock, and two seperate colonies on different rocks with about 6 heads each. Ive had the frag for two months: very hardy and wuick growing

I know! I really should have snapped a shot with my phone, but i got so excited about snagging such a cool find that i just forgot. As soon as i get a chance i will stop by and get a shot of it.

I can't wait until i am able to add it to my tank. I should be good in about two or three weeks. I started my tank with a massive amount of already established live rock from the LFS show tank, so the cycle has been extremely smooth so far. The thing that i am really waiting on is the arrival of my lights. I should have them this weekend. Once i have them in place i will probably go pick the rock up a couple of weeks later. I am thinking of adding some zoas too.

Those "wild anemones" are probably just aptasia you can kill off with some kalk paste. The LFS owner should have known what they were... and probably didn't feel like treating the aptasia, so lowered the price of the rock.
