I have a 29 gallon tank which I remove about 1 gallon in a water change every 2-3 weeks.

I buy distilled water from the store and use that in my tank along with frequent salt level checks and temp checks.

I noticed a green algae growing on my back wall. I have an algae handle scrub pad which I use to get off some of the algae but due to not wanting to ruin my rock structure it is hard to get the back wall and it spreads to the other walls.

I have 2 black and white clowns, a 6 stripped wrasse and a fire fish in my tank currently.

I have a schedule of 10-13 hours of tank light for my little guys every day and the tank is near a window which is on the North Side of my house. I live in a mobile home and I open the south side blinds every day but the back side of the tank is where the problem is.

I was wondering what is the best way to clear up this problem and if it is a huge problem for my tank.

    Thank You

If it's what I'm thinking which is the algae that doesn't protrude from the glass then... it's no problem at all! Actually the only way to clear this up is scraping & daily maintenance!! I scrape my glass about 3-4 times every week to keep it nice and clear. but I know what you mean I always frag at least one of my acro's LOL.... If it's in the back wall and you can't reach it for cleaning then I guess I would just wait until coralline algae covers it up or redesign you rock work to be able to cleanin it safely.. whichever is more convenient for you

    Hi, and welcome to 3Reef!

While I agree that a lot of nuisance algae is mostly harmless, we do try to keep it at a minimum as it detracts from the appearance of our tanks, so for the sake of this discussion, I'll address a couple of issues.

    1) Filtration. What type of filter do you have? If it's a power filter or canister, how often do you clean or change the media? Trapped food and waste will still break down into dissolved organics and create nutrients that fuel algae growth. Do you have a protein skimmer? Not an absolute must, but they do remove dissolved organics from the water.

    2) Lighting. What type of light(s) do you have and how often do you change the bulbs? Old (or wrong type) bulbs will fuel algae growth even in a low-nutrient environment, as will direct sunlight.

    Hope this helps. :)
