Good morning everyone I have a question regarding algae. My tank is newly cycled and has been running for about 2 months with about 125lbs of live rock. I noticed brown algae last week on th front and side glass and I came home last night and it appears to be green hair algae. I assume tis is normal but want to know if I should just leave it alone and let it do its thing or do I need to do something? I have a decent Cuc consisting of an emrald crab 5 very activ turbo snails 5 nassarious snails a sand drifting star, a brittle star, a serpent star a Halloween hermit, 4 blue leg hermits and 4 red leg hermits. Is this just part of th patience process? Hat should I do? I run my 2 metal hallide lights about 8 hours a day from 3-11. 250 watts each its a tall bow front tank

    Check your parameters:
    SG
    Temp
    Ammonia
    Nitrite
    Nitrate
    Phosphate

That should give you the cause. Your nitrates or phosphates might be high which will lead you in the direction of fixing it. How old are the lights?

Definitely need some fans, that temp is too high IMO. That combined with nitrates/phosphates could cause some algae issues.

I would stay on top of the gha. It can get out of hand quickly. Once it becomes to long the cuc can't do anything with it.

You can also siphon as much of it out as you can and then use new mixed water for your WC. What kind of water do you use also? That could cause it too. Do you have any pics?

You might want to check the dates on your test. They do expire & will give false readings.

I've got fans n stalled now. I will take pics it's tonight it's not out of control and I think my phosphates need to be controlled I placed phosphate sponge in my 2 sock filters and trying to keep the temp closer to 80-81 now that the fans r running.

I temporarily drop my lights down a few hours a day to help slow the spread. Once it's gone you can restore the 8 hours a day.

Phosphates, nitrates/nitrites, and lighting have a lot to do with it. I notice mine grown in and around my power heads due to the extreme flow, but the turbos take care of it so no big deal. You need flow in the tank to keep your detritus areas in check. Some pictures will help determine if you have a bad issue going on, or if it's just a normal cycle phase. With no fish in there you shouldn't be feeding a whole lot. The cuc will feed off the brown stuff soon enough, and as well the green. Watch your feedings, keep them small, and keep testing. I haven't had luck with the pads, but thats just me. Water changes and good husbandry (proper feeding and what not) have kept my tank looking very clean and lively.
