My tank is almost 8 weeks old and i had my first algae bloom. The diatoms are gone but i now am left with the long, green algae. It was growing all over the glass and i used my mag float for a few days and its now just all over my rocks. I am really confused about what i should do? Will this stuff go away? I have a small cuc right now and am planning on ordering my recommended package from reef cleaners. Is this green hair algae bloom normal around the 6-8 week of cycling? Should i cut the lights back a couple hours? My tests are all good. 0 Phosphates and really low Nitrates? Help!!!

Yea this is normal.. GHA is a pain in the butt... But you can beat it.. If you have no corals or light dependent animals in the tank you can just cut the lights all together.. You can also start doing water changes.. That will help.. Also you can add a good clean up crew like blue legged hermit crabs and some snails.. if you havent already..

For the water changes you can do 10%.. every week.. Or more if you would like to :) this will help with nitrates..

yep and if you dont have corals just make up some saltwater and your rocks i there for a minute and scrub off the algae then put it back in your tank then your CuC should take care of whats left over easily. But the reason you have GHA is that your nitrates or phosphates are outa wack and you need to get that fixed thats priority #1 good luck

I agree.. Yea you should cut the lights back.. Like I said you can also just turn them off for a few days, it doesnt look like anything in your tank really needs them.. :)

i have a bi color blenny and a firefish. As well as some snails and crabs. Will these guys be ok without lights for a while? Any shouldn't i wait till my cuc comes in before i scrub the rocks, so that when i put them back in, the crabs and snails can stay "on top" of it?
