I sifted my sand a little bit because it was getting nasty. I don't have a sand sifter because it's a 14g biocube. I have 2 Nassarius snails but they dont seem to do much. What is this nasty green stuff that keeps forming on the sand?

    Thanks

green cyano...its a bacteria...usually caused by overfeeding. Nassarius snails only eat food particles and stuff..get some different snails for algae eating...also if the lights are old/not as intense as they should be cyano can grow like wild fire

Ok I did look it up. I'm also getting some red slime algae. I could probably use more hermits. I'm probably gonna do some water changes this week. What for a 14g biocube do you recommend to battle this? I was thinking bout more hermits, would blue be ok to be with some scarlet reef hermits?

how new is the tank? what kind of lighting? how much are you feeding?...hermits won't eat red slime...i havent found anything to actually eat it.. simply because its a bacteria..even though it is called red slime algae...water change will help..suck out what you can, then do a water change...it can be a bugger to get under control

i would think about maybe trying to buy a small fighting conch...it will help keep the sand bed stirred...u may have to replace him once he grows, but they are pretty slow growers..also do you have sufficient flow in the tank? too little water movement can also be a problem with red or green slime...

the tank is about 4 months old. I took sand, water and live rock out of my existing 75g to start this tank. I have a Koralia One in the tank as a powerhead, i was also thinking bout upgrading the stock powerhead to maxijet 600 or 900. The lighting is the stock PC biocube. I just changed both bulbs so they should be good.

Yeh i would say to just keep up on the water changes, and get a vaccum and suck that stuff out...cut down the time you run the lights while trying to battle it...they do sell a cyano bacteria killer that does work safely, but i would try the natural way first..make sure ur using RO/DI water or things will just get worse..
