i have a plug with some green star polyps on it and am wondering if i should let it grow onto a live rock or not? I know its one of those corals that some hobbyist regret ever putting in their tank. I like the looks of this coral and was wondering does it really get out of hand fast or is it hard to trim back? I just got rid of my anthelia from my 14 gal biocube because it grew to fast. It was easy and fast. But if the GSP dosnt grow as fast as anthelia i think i will maybe let it grow on the back wall of my cube, that way i can remove it easily if i think its getting out of control.
Has anyone had success with growing GSP on the back wall of a nano?
Does it come off the back wall easily?
Does it get out of hand fast?

lol faster than anthelia. let it grow on your back wall. by itself on a rock in your sand with nothing else around

or ditch it while you're ahead.

i dont think that they grow out of hand at an alarming rate but I also have some and like the look but I think they can be easily controlled...at least I haven't had any problems keeping GSP at bay

It grows fast, but its also very easy to trim. IMO its the easyiest coral in the hobby to frag

nothing really grows at an alarming rate. but i can say that gsp is the fastest growing common coral available. i can understand your point of view when working with a 90g tank but we are both using the biocube with limited space.

on another note. if you do grow gsp on your back wall, yes it will be fairly simple to remove. you can actually peel it away. but rock touching the wall will be at risk of gsp overtake.

Crusty, if you have room on your sand for a single piece of LR that won't touch other rocks, then isolating the GSP won't be an issue. I have a single fist-sized piece of LR with xenia on it positioned on my sand and it's grown vertically and has nearly budded over the entire rock over the time I've had it--but it's not spreading--and that was intentional.

    You can do it. :)

It is a cool looking coral, and does grow faster than most. The biggest negative I have to say about it is, I have many softies that are growing right into SPS and of all of them the GSP is the only one so far that will flat out kill the SPS and grow right over the skeleton. I think it would be awesome on your back wall. Or you could just put the frag in the sand and have a little waving community isolated there.
