I have only been in the hobby for 5 months thus far, but have found a new friend in it.

Received a 47 (?) gallon S/W tank from a friend who was moving and his wife wouldn't allow him to take it with them. (Thanks!)

He had had it for a couple of years and I recieved it with a yellow tang, 4 striped damsel, clown fish, and one redish "live rock".

It has standard flourescent double hooded lights (eclipse natural daylight F15T8)

We (my skeptical wife and I) upgraded the filter system to a tetratech PF 300 with heater, a powerhead 201, a bubbler charcoal filter (my dad gave me) and a cheep protein skimmer that I wish I had waited on and gotten the better one.

Our family has grown to the original three fish, two blue/yellow tailed damsels, another 4 striped damsel, two domino damsels (one which has trippled in size) a dragon goby, a cleaner shrimp, a feather duster which has shown itself from the original reddish live rock, several pounds more of fiji live rock, two snails and 5... no 4... no 5 hermit crabs.:) We have also added several artificial plants and rocks for color.

I absolutely love my saltwater community. I sit and watch it for hours, take pictures (and curse my camera for not getting crisp pictures (Ha)) ?Then my wife calls me to bed.

Just for a laugh: When I first got my tank, The previous owner told me to clean it weekly. Being the overachiever, I did just that. I took the fish out, rocks, plants, 75% of the water, vaccumed the sand, scrubbed the glass, washed the rocks and plants and then put them all back together, leaving nothing for my 5 snails to eat... I now have 2. any way... now I know.

Last week, I moved my rocks around and witnessed a "ploom" of a white cloud which dissapatied slowly. I now see what appear to be thousands of tiny feather dusters on all my rocks, real and fake, the glass, and even the larger of the two snails. Hmm.

I hope to learn alot from this forum, and am glad that I found it.

I am trying to talk the nursing home that I work at into having a large S/W tank for the residents. We'll see.

    God Bless!

Welcome! I am fairly new also, and have spent MANY late nights just trying to absorb all the knowledge here. I can say you won't find a more helpful community of folks than these.

    Salutations back at ya!!!

 Wow! - are you ever off to a great start.

Only issue I can see is that you may have missed some the lesson's learned one picks up when starting tank from scratch.

Study up and stay close to this forum.

If you start to experience any strangeness in tank, holler quick.

Suggesting getting in habit of setting aside one morning a week for equipment maintenance and water changes...

    Good luck!

    Enjoy!

    Keep us posted...

    (and for Luna...post some pics ;) )

PS, and if you want some good beginner "learning links" - PM me and I will forward best I have found/seen on to you (and anyone else for that matter...)
