Even photographers take 100s of photos, expecting a minority of them to come out well.

I was hoping to see some awesome macro shots of your tank. Sorry it didn't work out tonight.

    I want the D3200 in red. :)

I have spent the last month reading about ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and how to white balance. I want to start off basically shooting in the raw.

When shooting the tank. I'm planning on starting around 200 ISO, the aperature seems to just depend on what I want people to focus on when they look at the picture. And I assume I'm going to want a pretty fast shutter speed.

Besides white balancing, what other aspects should I be researching?

Yeah, my Mom always says the same. She's pretty good. ALLENPIX by BARBARA ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY is her webpage. She's so excited about me getting into photography. It's going to be nice to have someone around to help me learn and to get to connect with her in a new way.

Well, it's official! Just purchased my first DSLR. Nikon D3200 that came with an 18-55mm lense. And I'm going to use a 60mm NIkon and 105mm Nikon Macro lense (out of my mother's closet of goodies)... I also got a really nice sturdy tripod and remote! All delivered on Wednesday!

Sorry I missed your question on what to read, but you have the bases pretty well covered for now. You should be able to get good quality pictures with ISO 800 and maybe even ISO 1600 so you can use a shutter speed of 1/125 to 1/250. The depth of field will also control your need for a higher ISO. The smaller the aperture the higher the ISO and slower the shutter but the better the depth of field. I find for my tanks I need F/5.6 or higher to get full depth of the tank in focus.

Congrats on the new camera. Definitely use the tripod with the macro lenses to get the best shot. The recommended slowest hand held shutter speed is 1/focal length. So it you have a focal length of 100mm then you want a shutter speed of 1/100.
