I've read a lot about the importance of a ground probe. Are they necessary on a new tank? Everything we have is plugged into a GFCI.

    Thanks!!

I have them on all my tanks and I view them as a necessity for mine and my tank's safety

Many people love them and like the safety net but many people believe if there is stray voltage then the probe is only a "band-aid". My boss was an electrical engineer for 20 years and he told me that I was better of testing for stray voltage on my equipment and weeding out the "leakers" than to use a probe. My uncle is also an electritcion and said something similar but said the probe won't do any harm. The only thing that CAN'T be plugged into a GFI is T5 ballasts as they all have some "stray" voltage and if you have enough bulbs you will pop the GFI constantly. The stray voltage is just enough to break the threshhold.

Always use them with a GFCI! Without a GFCI all the stray current is bleeding off threw the tank and to ground, this is unhealthy for your live stock and can make it more likely for you to electrocute yourself.

I agree stray voltage should be tested for periodically, isolated and repaired/replaced.

I also agree you should have a probe.

Insurance - you don't want to find out you have :bulb:stray current:bulb2: by seeing death running wild if it comes before you test for it.

Thanks! Are all ground probes the same, or are some better than others?
