im prbably going to sound really silly here, hopefully not, but for the life of me cannot find grounding probes in australia, and i was wondering what are my options. i do have a few very good mates that are electrician and they have no idea what im talking about, but was wondering if there were any ways of doing it diy?

All you need is a 3 prong extension cord and a stainless steel rod. Take off the two square prongs(usa) and keep the round bottom prong(usa). Attach the ground wire( usually the green wire) to the stainless steel rod and place the rod in the sump or DT. Hope this made sense.

It must be stainless steel or titanium. Anything else will hurt the tank. Otherwise spot on.

I would go titanium or if you know your way around metals a high grade stainless. Low grade stainless steel will rust.

How do you protect the connection between the copper wire and the titanium rod? Do you use a neoprene sheath (or similar)?

You can use heat shrink tubes to cover the copper wires and to connection the copper wire to the rod.
