Once you have experienced stray voltage in your system you'll never go without one.

Grounding probes are something that I've thought about getting, but, I suppose until you've been zapped it's something that seems unimportant....

I don't use one, but opinions on probes vary. Some say that having stray voltage in the tank isn't a bad thing as your livestock aren't grounded. Once you add a probe, you provide a current return path, which is a requirement to actually get zapped. :uhoh:

There have also been studies that show electrical current has a pretty positive effect on coral growth.

I don't but need to get one! I read the stray voltage--although it may not be shocking--can cause all sorts of fish problems...head and lateral line erosion for one.

....well, I pulled a 'Gettingfiesty' today! I knocked the light on my sump, right into the sump..... (did you get the hubby that replacement DeWalt drill yet?) It was a sizzling and a crackling.....

Would a grounding probe have helped pull the current out of that water?

LOL That is why you need GFCI! I am glad you are OK. Unfortunately I don't think the grounding probe helps in cases like this, but is for the lower level stray voltage.

And no, haven't replaced it yet. Was hoping that maybe it wasn't in long enough to hurt it, but plugged it in and tried it the other day--I'm either really brave or really stupid--and after it shot out sparks decided it was going to the trash. My hubby told me he wants to frame it to go alongside the tank.
