I just purchased one yesterday to place in my new tank. Never really thought too much about it before a couple weeks ago, and now any safety device that is out there I am getting. It is not only to protect your investment, because come on, saltwater fish are not cheap, but it is to protect you and your family.

I also recommend getting good, quality powerstrips and not buying those cheap strips that you can get for a couple of bucks and having it placed into a ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI). I have also placed a smoke detecter above my tank now.

Inwall has a good article on fire safety on this forum and I only wish I found it before I had a fire. Not sure if water followed a cord down onto the power strip, or there was some type of arc thingy from the powerstrip, but basically a fire started behind my sump about a month ago.

Then last night, another GFCI probably saved my life or at least my house while I was making water. The tube fell out of the can I was making it in. I keep a powerstrip that runs the pumps in big plastic trashcan lid in my basement to keep it off floor in case of flood (which happens often..forget to turn it off). Well, the tube landed somehow right into the lid. When I went down to turn off the water, the entire powerstrip was covered completely in water. Thankfully the GFCI flipped or else who knows what would have happened?

I know off the topic of ground probes, but safety device the same;D

I tested my tanks about 3 months ago and had 36 volts of stray electricity. Since adding a ground probe I dont have any. I can tell a big difference in montipora digitas they seem the most effected by it in my tank.
