What should I do about the hydroids?

The growth on the Mermaid fan is somewhat translucent and looks almost like a cotton ball. Any idea?

Usually hydroid jellies die off as the system ages.

I do not think they have lasted past month 4 or 5 in any of my tanks.

Is this a newly added algae?

It was added about a month ago. The tank has had water in it for 14 months, but the lights were just turned back about 4 months ago.

The thing is almost sponge like (by looks, not touch).

Oh that does looks like a sneaky sponge.

Try blowing it with a turkey baster, if it flies off not a sponge ( no super blast though).

It came off. Had a very faint "low tide" smell to it.

Hmm I would have to go with bacterial then.

Quit the puzzle, will be interesting to see if the same thing reappears or appears else where.

I think it will. If it is a bacteria, I hope my dissolved oxygen doesn't reduce. I don't have any fish, so its not a huge concern, but an issue I don't want to deal with none the less.

Keep the surface water disturbed with your circulation pumps and that will most likely not be a problem.
