I've got 2 snails, and they both have developed some sort of growth on their shells. It's sort of a light brown blob with a couple of holes. Around the holes are what look like an upside down fancy lampshade.

Any ideas what that could be and is it harmful?

I can try to provide a picture, but I thought it might be a common thing and the picture not be necessary.

if so there vermetid snails and they don't sting any thing but they can bother some corals and keep them from opening plus they spread fast are hard to get rid of and can clog pumps and plumbing.

if this is what it is do yourself a favor and scrape them off of the snails but do it out of the tank.
