The photos included are shots to monitor the growth of my Giant Cinnamon Paly (Protopalythoa Grandis), which i find to be a slow grower, up until lately when a few new heads have begun to develop.

Also included is a growth shot of my ORA pink birdsnest. (my first SPS).

Lighting is an Odyssea T5 fixture with ATI bulbs.

i do not dose anything and i have been using Red Sea Coral Pro Salt.

AFTER: ( at about one month) NOTE: all of the new branches beginning to develop. I really like the growth pattern of this coral. It will be interesting to see what it looks like further down the road.

    Very nice JP,

The birds nest looks to be really going to town. Good coloration, nice PE.

I do not even know enough about palys to know they are slow growers, do you know if they grow on sand substrate as well, and do yours have the speckling of sand on the stalks?

    Corailline,
Unfortunately i do not know the answers. Mine is on a plug on my LR and as far as sand speckling on the stalks i am not quite sure what you mean. I do know that they are some of the more poisonous of the palythoa family and have read stories of people getting sick from moving/touching them.

I read from a palys/zoanthids guru that the way to tell the difference besides size is

    1. Palys will grow spread across sandy substrate and tend to grow from individual stocks not a joint stock like zoanthids.

    2. That when you look at the stock of palys they look to be covered in a fine sandy dust and that is not true of zoas.

So I looked and both held true with my very limited stock of one type of palys and one type of zoanthids. I am always wary of such generalizations but there must distinctions between the two. I am curious to see how true those observations are .

    Corailline,
It appears that my stalk is growing a base and consuming the plug.

It three new growths are growing from the stalk.

The paly doesnt respond immediately to touch or food thus varying from my other palys (in the "flytrap" sense)

i have not noticed the dusty effect. However, next time ive got my arm in there i will be sure to have a look-see.

Also, the colony that mine came from was on a plug as well, in cluster form. maybe 7 heads or so. i havent seen them any bigger.

I saw a colony for sale in the Divers Den on LA for 100something dollars and it only had a few heads on it. I believe it was on a plug as well.

i hope this was useful ;D
