I was getting a little worried because my salinty level was at 1.029 but I brought it down yesterday, so its been like 5 days but this morning I woke up and i can see a little bit of what looks like grass coming out. Should I notice anything diff with the birds nest frag I picked up by now?

depending on the coral's feelings on how your water stability is the corals will extend,
keep in mind you had a high salinity.
also If you had just purchased the coral/frag recently depending on what kind of coral it is,It tends to open up when the coral starts to feel comfortable in your water...
also your temp. of your tank seems to play a big part of your corals extension...
    do a search on here.
there's been recent threads on temperature changing will affect extension and health of corals...
    hope this helps...
    happy holidays!

It will take longer with the birdsnest although you should see some polyp extension. Please post a pic of the corals so we can possibly provide more info. I did the same with my SG and have a few tips that died off on my birdsnest. I recommend removing the tips just into the healthy parts and you should see a nice recovery on those tips.
