Help, My GSP's had previously been a super nucleaur green, but now they are higher up and under better light, but are turning brown! Has anyone had this problem?

If I move them lower in my tank could green again?

when corals turn brown, it most of the time means either to much light or to much nutrients. this could be both or just one of the other. if it was good where you had it, i would put it back there and test your water to make sure your nitrates arent to high.

why did you move them if they were doing well? Move them back, they are very hardy and will probably recover if they are not too far gone.

I just conducted a water change last night, and added aqueon filter with activated carbon yesterday as well. I didn't even think about nitrates possibly being the cause. I only have about 25% of my clean up crew in place a few soft corals and nothing else, but I was about 5 days late with a water change because of my work schedule. Thanks for the advice!

I had to move them to reposition the rock they were on in the tank. The rock their frag was on kept getting moved by my herculeon red mithrax crab.

Oh I remember those days – been there too … ok, next time you need to move an established coral always keep it at the same distance from your lights. Corals “get use” to certain conditions and really shouldn’t be shocked by increased/decreased lighting.

Are your parameters in check? I like that you are doing water changes – but have you checked the parameters? RO/DI water being used with a quality salt mix? There are many other reason around water quality that could result in the same effect on your stars. Even PH swings and salinity swings from poor maintenance. But more than likely its resulting from the move to a higher location.

You can also consider crazy glue to hold the rock in place – or even some marine epoxy (I have used this in the tank in the past for rock placement – works well, pliable and reef safe)

I had my water tested yesterday when I picked up the salt at my LFS, my nitrates were a touch high was all. Part of the deal of me having an aquarium at work is I can't have a test kit. (They are scared of the chemicals since some are corrosive). My GSP's opened up again nicely this morning, and I'm noticing that the group looks a touch greener from my desk. Yesterday it just looked like a brownish mass.

I am glad they are recovering for you. Take water home with you to test - or keep the test kits in your car and test at your lunch hour. Good luck with your tank !

I wouldn't leave test kits in a car. They specifically state to be kept between certain temperatures, and a car in the summer and winter won't be those temps! Well, unless you live somewhere temperate LOL.
