Hey Coral Last question about temp, what temp is needed for cycling?

Where you have your temp now should suffice. Tank cycling temp isn't as crucial yet as when you get corals and increased bioload IMO. 78-80 is fine! Again you want to try to be as constant at that temperature as you can +/-2 degrees without any ill effects! Removal of detritus and gas exchange is the important things right now. Strong water flow and extensive skimming to remove the DOM, and the Particulate matter suspended in your water cloumn are ideal!

LOL pardon me but I figured if your refractometer wasn't an ATC model that the instructions would have the proper directions on how to figure your true reading at the temperatue you're sampling at.

Another easy way to watch that spec grav

    HI,
I ve found during the winter months I lose about 1 gal of water a day to EVAP, that seems like alot but if you consider the temp of the water the constant flow to the sump and the skimmer is using some.
So I try to maintain a constant level in the sump, the tank is self leveling due to siphoning but the sump may drop a inch a day.
So I add a little RO as needed to maintain the sump level this keeps my spec grav stable too.
    Doug
I check it weekly if the water is down in the sump a couple inches it will be around 1.025 if the sump is almost full its 1.023
Just an observation and everyones systems will vary but patterns help us understand the additional stress we put on our live stock by constant changes in water.
    Doug
PSPS I 've read skimmers can use up salt not a problem for me, but I do add a little iodine weekly for the inverts and other trace elements.

Yeah, I do basically the same thing!!!
And yes you do lose alittle salt by your skimmer and don't forget as salt creep, the unsightly salt remnants that accumulate all over your tank etc.!!! Just don't add the salt creep to your tank as it isn't good for your livestock due to dust etc. that has accumulated on it!
