Guard for return pump intake

    What can I use as a guard for my return pump intake? Right now there is a 90 degree elbow facing the bottom of the sump and it is about 1/4 inch from the bottom. We have a small eel though and I have found him down in the sump and I think he could possibly get into this small space and get sucked up into the impeller. I'd like to get maybe some small mesh or something but will this impede my flow?

    i think i am gonna go with a strainer. Kind of forgot about those Was just looking for something easier I could get at Home Depot because I know most of my LFS won't have them
