After my first failed attempt a year ago to setup up a sump and overflow, I want to try it again. I need some advice as to an overflow box and return pump. I have done a lot of research on sump builds and still feel left in the dark. I have a 40 gallon DT and plan on a 10 sump with a single bubble baffle. Can anyone recommend a good overflow to support a MAG 5 return? Also, any personal literature that may have helped you with the design and build.

Any help or advice would be great. Im hoping with some help I can complete this much needed addition.

What are some of the things you are having a hard time grasping?

Well, I guess its mostly making sure the return pump doesn't over flow the DT. Also, my last sump had a horrible overflow and wouldn't work all that well. I am just worried about either the DT or sump overflowing because I am on the second floor.:-/

Well, using gravity to supply water to a sump and return it via pump, definitely has flood risk any way you look at it. Any time my return pump came close to flooding the display(actually happened once) was from lack of proper cleaning/maintenance. And any time my sump almost flooded was because I left my ato running. Again, user error. There are a couple of preventative measures, such as, backflow prevention, your intake can have a snorkel that will only allow a certain amount of water if the o-flow fails. Ultimately, buy good equipment and keep up on maintenance to reduce the risk greatly.

Ive learned my lesson on not buying good equipment and was wondering how everyone setup their return line? I plan on using flex hose, but I want to be able to drill the "U" joint for the DT so I can manage a power failure siphon. What can I use in my DT that I can drill but yet wont look over bulky?

You can do most of you return plumbing with your flex and transition to hard pipe at the tank. I like to do all the plumbing with hard pipe/pvc. That flex stuff is actually harder to use IMO. Are you intimidated by the plumbing aspect of the build?

Well not at all. Ive built my closed loop system, Its mainly getting it properly setup with the correct overflow and return pump. Mikejrice's recommendation for the overflow was perfect. I want to make sure I properly drill the siphon holes and tune the return pump properly. I understand the concept very well, but id rather not mess this up due to water damage. I guess I am looking for some guidance and lessons learned.

The best way to do it is to accommodate for water which will fill the sump when you cut the power. On the return you should drill holes at the top or the water will get siphoned depending on how low in the tank your return is. When I turn off my pump it adds an extra 2 or 3 gallons to my sump. If flooding is a problem I would suggest going with a bigger sump like a 20 gallon. This way you can have more space for extra water when the pump is turn off.

Thank you for your advice. I had ordered the overflow listed above along with another mag5 pump. I was wondering if a pump shutoff valve would be worth looking into and where can i find one?
