    Congrats on the Mandarin lessons

honestly, that may be a skill that could greatly benefit you in your career

I lost a job that I held for 28 years, last year
within 3 weeks, I had 3 offers from previous competitor companies to the one I worked for

and in all 3 cases, having a British national on the ground in China, with an ability to speak the language came up as a positive reason for why I was being offered a job

    Happy New Year.

We had a pot luck at work for it (as we have many people of chinese decent in my office, plus it's a good excuse for a pot luck :D ).

My boss gave us the day off because all of my co-workers are Chinese. Didn't celebrate though :-/ Hopefully my coworkers will at least bring some Chinese deserts tomorrow :)

    depends on the business Zumaboy

any industry that utilises a lot of energy can and often do close for 1 month
in particular glass blowing factories, which as you must know utilise a lot of energy creating the heat for the glass melting
running these in low temperatures costs additional money
so they close for a 1 month period around this time, which naturally coincides with the coldest weather in the region

platting facilities (brass, chrome etc) often do similar

with these 2 sub suppliers plus others, closing for 4 weeks some of the factories that rely heavily on them for components also have extended breaks

the order book may say "take a week off"
but the reality is , they cant produce much unless they have invested up front for parts they need and thus often take the 2 weeks off

Thanks for the info Steve...... enjoy the candies, cookies and preserved fruits. Are the festivities more elaborate in China than say Singapore or Taiwan.

cant comment on Singapore but I do know that they are equal in importance for many Taiwanese people I know

I work with many Taiwanese people at various factories and yes they share the same excitement at the prospect of the weeks holiday with their families at this time of year
