I have a 30gal tank, and I am looking at making an extra 10gal tank I have on a Refugium/sump/. The basic idea I have for this is to take the 10 gal set it about 6 inches higher then the main tank. And have a powerhead move the water into this tank, then go throught some foam/spong for mech filtering then into the tank. Then to get back into the tank use a another hose to syphon it back into the tank. But the bulk heads and where and what should I really put in one. I have seen some good info for a refugium or sump but not a good write up on making a good combo.

Well I am in transintion of moving everything over to my 75gal. I have an extra 20gal sitting around(used to be the devil crab tank). So its time to make a sump. how would I go about adding carbon to my sump? Just in a filter sock?

Just place it in a filter bag or what I do is put carbon in my phosphate reactor with the phosban media. Either way is fine. Have to replace the carbon every month or so roughly.
