im all about the T5's...If you have a good setup with T5's they can support anything so it come down to personal preference. If you are crafty there are ways to fit more than 4 lamps over a 55.

Thats really weird, I have about 5 or 6 purple mushrooms in the bottom of a 15 tall with the light from a 16 gallon bow front (single tube std Fluorescent, with aquarium bulb) on top and they are growing and splitting like crazy one is about 4 inches across. And all biggest and best are in my frag tank under the rack, in low light some are getting really big and are going to have to be moved.

How many bulbs do you recommend for a 75 gallon, 6 or 8?

I think there are a lot of variables here, but you can't argue that with the proper metal halides you will never have to worry about something (like certain clams) surviving underneath them. That was my decision maker, my current lighting I have now is major overkill for the stock I have, but I have plans for more and who knows what I will want here in 5 years? Buying lights is expensive no matter what you do, but buying lights twice to upgrade is the most expensive!

6 bulbs ho t5 on my 75gal. I have sps, lps, softies, clams. I have the nova extreme 6 bulbs t5 ho, on the mounting legs, with zoas and lps going crazy on the sand, 21 inches from the light. I do keep crystal clear tops and water which may help with the light reaching the bottom. look at my new thread, pics. Check the tank out.
