I have alot of GHA look at my pics. I got rid of it ALL with GFO and reducing feeding. And then I stopped using GFO and BOOM! Emerald crabs and hermits sometimes cause problems and if you want an algae free tank then your algae eating fish will starve when you get rid of it. Just a couple of ideas and my opinion bud!

GFO - bonds phosphate ions to it- which basically means, it removes one of the food sources for algaes

in order to maximise the benefit, manual removal, to harvest the algae and the phosphate the algae has absorbed
run the GFO at half normal dose when you start so as to not shock the inhabitants with a rapid change (even changes for the better, when made to quickly can upset some of the creatures we keep)

change the GFO regurlarly over the 1st couple of months
at the same time continue removing the GHA (if it dies as a result of starvation, it releases the phosphates for other GHA to use - hence removal of as much as you can, as often as you can)

Do you use a reactor of just a media bag??

    both work

Reactor is more efficient, it keeps the GFO from clogging up and thus only presenting external surface area to absorb phosphate

if your using it in filter bag, the little and change often policy is even more important IME
