Hey guys Wasnt sure where to post this one. So I have a8 gallon nano that I am switching over to a 20 gallon, thus far I have taken half the live rock from it and live sand and put it into the 20 with half of the water from the 8 gallon as well as a squeeze from the filter lol if you catch my drift. So its been cycling for a week and a half, no I know this is a no no, but I fragged 2 of my zoas a week ago and placed the cuttings in the cycling tank for poops and giggles. lol. They have both split and seem to really like the water and lighting on the new tank. however, it seems I'm starting to get a green bubble and hair algae problem, is this way too soon to add a clean up crew? my water paramaters are good Ammonia 1ppm nitrite 2 ppm and nitrate less the 1 ppm, this is stayed steady for one week straight now, and I am curious to see if I could add an emerald crab to clean the mess up? my corals are ok so is this a good sign that I might be able to get away with it?

not a good idea on the corals but im not going to lecture you on stuff you already know...as for the clean up crew wait for levels to drop...if you would like to speed up your cycle add in some kind of bacteria booster like biospire or something along those lines...i cant remember which one i used....i had a full cycle in <2 weeks when using the bacteria booster...best 8 buck spent

yeah I'm using a nutrafin bio cycle, says it can cycle in 3 days but that bull. again my frags were just small peices but are now large lol. wasnt concerned if they made it or not, but they are splitting like mad.. I guess I'll have to wait on a clean up crew, is there anything to stunt the algae growth aside from light hours being shortened?

in optimum conditions it could take 3 days...the corals are probably splitting so much due to the uncomfortable conditions and as for algae other than a clean up crew and lights id say if your using tap dont do it....get a ro/di for yourself or buy ro/di water from lfs/grocery store and also some macro algaes would help like chaeto etc

also another thing to add about emerald crabs and bubble algae is that they wont always eat it but can be persuaded to, like if you cut back on feedings it will look for other sources of food...a lot of people say they dont always eat bubble algae but in my opinion their systems are probably to well fed for the crabs to want to bother with bubble algae

damn. so chaeto is what goes in the filter or sump right? how does this aid in preventing algae if it is algae?

you can put it basically anywhere you would like but the sump/refugium is the best place for it...some people have it in their display tanks and any macro algae will work not just chaeto

macro algae help with algae probelms because hair algae, bubble algae, etc are considered micro algaes and macro algae get higher presidence and will out compete micro algaes for the nutrients needed for algaes to grow...also this will lower your nitrates etc as well

cool concept, may be more closely designed to a fuge than a sump but i get the idea but yea cheato is fine in that as long as the area its in is lit 24/7...a small incandecent fixture with the correct bulb would do great for it like a normal small wattage fixture and a 6500k fluorecent screw in bulb would work fine or maybe you could figure out a smaller fixture since the size is so small but you get the point...one of those candle flame bulb fixtures would probably be enough light granted you could find a 6500k bulb for it
