Hey I just got a Metal Halide fixture w/ 2 250's and 2 110 VHO for my 75 and was wondering a good hight to keep it off the water without heating up and evaporating to much water. I have removed my heater and it seems to be staying at 77 and it is hanging 6 in off the water.
    THANKS, Casey

I had mine about 6 inches off the water. I would think in the summer a fan in the sump would help with heat bu that would also create a lot of evap.

Most manufactors recommend between 6-14" which is a huge range but bulb intensity(wattage) comes in to play as does tank depth and livestock kept. Evaporation is mostly effective by dryness of the surrounding air, surface area of tank and if you are using fans to hasten evaporative cooling.

    Good luck

I have the same problem right now, mine are 6' high from the water. My canopy is compltely closed except for the back.

But heat rises and the top of the canopy gets hot. Mine are not retrofit...they are deluxe ones inside a small fixture but the fixture gets superhot even in the winter time.

    I keep my room @ 71 F

I was thinking about putting 2 holes directly above the lights, the size of the holes would be the size of the entire light fixture(sort of a rectangle) and im gona push the lights up, so they would stick out from the top of the canopy(where most of the heat is) and the only part that will by in the canopy is the glass filter(bottom part of the light fixture). Then install fans on the side of the canopy and in the middle on the top.

I know that it might look weired on the top like 2 cony things but, i don't know what else to do really

here's what my small fixtures look like
