The problem with all hermits is they are omnivorous. Which in short means if its edible they may eat it. What is safe in one tank could be destructive in another. Remember different food sources can make for opportunistic feeders I have seen peppermint shrimp which don't touch anything for 2 years all of a sudden decide my hammer looks tasty and had to remove them. If yours is eating the coral mat I would remove it and sell it back to lfs because it may eat more. Heck sell it to Rickzter he seems pretty confident that that one is completely safe. A rule I follow is if the $10 animal is eating the $40 animal remove the $10 animal. Good luck with your Crabs!

Just to chime in...the good doctors say the bumblebee snail is reef safe and a good tank cleaner. Mine ate all my feather dusters, most small worms, and a really cool vermatid. I saw him do the deed on the last one myself! Definitely NOT reef safe!

My hermits (one blue legged, one red legged) never bothered my green star polyps...but then again, they never bothered anything and would allow nassarius snails to steal their food! They both died (I believe they starved from my nassarius "gang" taking all their food away...
