Okay I just purchased my first bi-color Hammer coral. I have two questions. Will my clowns host in it? Second, I have a Majestic Angel in this tank where the Hammer is going. I have Toadstools, Kenya trees, Star Polyps, Pumping Xenia, and some SPS. My angel does not bother any of them. He does however eat mushrooms and Zoas. Thus I have neither of them in my tank. Ive heard Hammer coral sting. Will my angel eat the Hammer coral? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

First, I personally feel it would be in your best interest if the clowns do not reside in the Hammer. Due to it's skeletal structure, all too often the delicate tissue becomes injured from the clowns activity and the coral dies.

IIRC, Hammers, just like most other stinging LPS corals, only sting when they have their sweeper tentacles extended. That's usually at night.

As for the Angel eating the coral, there's never any guarantee. The best you can do is make sure you keep him well fed and hope.

I agree...Euphyllia sp. are prone to being "injured" by their own skeleton...I've seen clowns hosted in hammer, frogspawns, etc., but if they get too "rough" they can damage the host coral which can lead to bacterial infections. You never know what clowns will pick for a host in captivity...they are just about as likely to take to the hammer as they are a powerhead, LOL!

+2 My clown pair are trying to make a host out of my brain and it's driving me nuts. Here is a picture of the drastic measures I have taken.

Be happy if the clown choose not to host your coral. :)
