Is it ok if I have a hang on back filter for my 29 gal reef tank as the only form of mechanicle filtration? I gave one that is made for a 60 gal.

    Its OK , Kingkipper

are you running it as mechanical? using sponges , filter pads etc?
do you rinse these regular in tank water when you do water changes?
otherwise the waste they collect , will become a source of nitrate over time
and can do more harm than good to your water quality

They are like pad inserts. Yes, I rinse then in the water I take out during water changes every 2 weeks and replace them every 4 weeks.

we don't have enough information to answer that. What kind of livestock are you keeping and how often do you water changes etc.

It is better to have a skimmer.

I have a 29 gal tank with 2 perc. clowns, 2 yellow tail blue damsels, 1 scooter blenny, and 1 pepermint shrimp. I also have blue mushrooms under pc lighting and I am hoping to get some soft corals in there. I also have a protine skimmer in there and I think it seems to be doing a good job. Also in the HOB filter it has something called bio fibber that is not replacable and just stays in there. Should I remove this? I think it is intended to work like bio balls but it looks like there is this brownish gunk in it.

remover the biofilter, your live rock should be plenty of biofilter for your tank.
